The Science of Tattooing | What Is Tattoo Ink Made Of?

The Science of Tattooing

What We Do!

Will tattoos interfere with my medical condition or medication?

If you ask a tattoo artist any of these questions, they will likely not have a clear answer. In some cases, neither will your doctor. The Science of Tattooing exists to change that. Our goal is to help tattooers and doctors to bring a higher quality of service to their clients and patients, respectively. By making this information accessible to everyone from all education levels, our intent is also to create a resource for anyone who is curious about the science at play in tattooing, particularly people who have gotten or want to get a tattoo.

After starting this project, it became clear that our work would not be done the moment we publish our textbook -- our research has uncovered a universe of opportunity for further study. We aspire to continue to develop this research and to create more resources. One such project is a searchable tattoo ink database; where individuals can search material safety data sheets (MSDSs) for material contents they would like to avoid.

Every purchase of the textbook helps to fund further research, projects, publications for The Science of Tattooing. We strive to grow in our own understanding and the overall body of work, and we look forward to working with the medical, scientific, regulatory, and tattooing communities -- and anyone else who is curious about the wide world of tattoo science.

About The Science of Tattooing

The science of tattooing will teach you everything you need to know about tattooing. We performed research in the area of tattooing. In this field, our goal is to educate people about tattoo education. All you need to know will be taught in our book. We provide access to online books and disseminate all available information in this field. Please contact us for more information. Hannah Wolf, a veteran tattoo artist, began working with PhDs and MDs in 2017 to develop a textbook about the materials used in tattooing. Through this process, she learned that there is a serious lack of research and educational material about the tattoo process. This is a topic that (permanently) touches millions of people worldwide each year. The project aims to bring existing research to tattooers, consumers, and the medical community; encourage further research into the subject matter, and ideally create better standards for tattoo procedures (particularly for clients with known medical conditions). This publication is our first edition in a series of books that will help bring educational materials and resources for further clarification for operators, lawmakers, and consumers. Every purchase of this publication further funds this project and we thank you for your contribution. We are always working to improve our research and ask for feedback and questions regarding this publication and future works.
