Knows What Causes Spine Problems
While difficult neck and back pain is a very common problem in medicine, the Decatur area is poorly served by other physical therapy and chiropractor clinics. The reasons are several. First, clinicians’ conceptual model of spinal pain is often misguided. 98% of spinal pain is the result of the natural process of progressive, degenerative, compression of the spine. This process starts with degenerative changes to the disc and eventually progresses to involve the joints, ligaments, and nerves. But it all starts and depends upon the initial, and progressive, degeneration of the spinal disc. In this conceptual model, the disc is like a deflating tire. As the disc loses water content and collapses, there is more pressure on the joints and nerves. Other providers’ treatments neglect to intervene in this process. That is a mistake because reversing this process has the most potential to improve difficult neck and back pain in the short term and for the long-term prognosis. Improving the microscopic and macroscopic status of the disc is the most effective non-surgical treatment to intervene in this critical process. And scientific research proves that the disc can be partially regenerated with the right treatment- mechanical decompression of the spinal disc. Regeneration has been documented and quantified in animal studies.
Dr. Castanet explains the simple pathogenesis of spinal pain in this video. If you understand how, and why, spinal pain starts and progresses, you’ll make a better choice about the treatments you choose. Unfortunately, most health care professionals practice their specialty with a predictable bias in favor of whatever they were trained to do, and whatever insurance companies reward. I guarantee that if you listen to Dr. Castanet, you’ll be convinced that his explanation of spinal pain makes the most sense. And, his advice about the most appropriate, effective treatment for spinal pain makes the most sense. Dr. Castanet has never been wedded to a myopic approach to spinal treatments. He is an independent thinker, has worked in more clinical specialties than other providers, and has chosen the most effective treatment for neck and back pain. And if a better treatment arrives, he’ll embrace that.
There is no other chiropractor in the Decatur area with Dr. Castanet’s broad medical background. But if you really do need surgical treatment or pain management, he will refer you to the best available. Apart from the above conceptual failings of spinal providers, there are also financial incentives to the status quo treatment and financial disincentives to changing the present treatment algorithm for patients. It’s not a conspiracy- it’s just that things won’t change with these financial impediments to change.
