What We Do!

Dr. Peter Lobl is a licensed clinical psychologist in NY who specializes in couples counseling, personality disorders and self-esteem issues. Welcome. If you are at my website, chances are something about your life does not feel right – either with a relationship, or with your experience of yourself, or with the direction you see yourself heading. If you are reading this, it hopefully also means that some part of you believes change is possible. I am a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Midtown Manhattan. I primarily work with adults and couples who experience recurring and distressing relationship problems either at work or at home. I also treat mood, anxiety, and personality disorders and work with patients on issues related to self esteem and anger management. Through therapy, I’ve seen people go from a place of emotional pain to a place where there was gradually more and more hope. I’ve worked with patients who felt adrift and uncertain about themselves, and who through therapy, ended up feeling more solid, more real, and more fully themselves. And I’ve worked with couples who couldn’t connect and who were angrily and dismissively talking at each other and past each other, and who ended up developing genuine closeness through couples counseling.

Dr. Lobl is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in New York City and an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also works as faculty in the Harlem Family Medicine Residency at The Institute for Family Health where he teaches medical residents about the impact of psychosocial factors on patient health. As part of his work in the residency, Dr. Lobl has, for the past 5 years, co-facilitated support groups and Balint groups and presented didactics on a wide array of subjects related to physician – patient communications.

Dr. Lobl is a graduate of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral at Teachers College – Columbia University. Following graduation, he completed a postdoctoral Fellowship at the Addiction Institute of New York. He then worked for six years as a Supervising Psychologist at the Center for Intensive Treatment of Personality Disorders at Mount Sinai West.

Prior to his current career, Dr. Lobl worked in the legal field. He is a graduate of Duke University School of Law and worked thereafter as an Associate for several large law firms including the Dallas offices of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld; the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices of Clifford Chance; and the DC offices of Shaw Pittman (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman).

As part of his practice, Dr. Lobl works often with patients facing issues of cross cultural assimilation and acculturation. Dr. Lobl has lived and worked in different cultures and is fluent in French. His doctoral dissertation concerned the impact of wives’ relative income on marital closeness across different cultural contexts. For the research on his dissertation, Dr. Lobl collected data from married women and men living in the U.S., Vietnam, and France. The results of this study showed that culture has a significant effect on marital closeness.
