Be Careful With The Plastic Published May 3, 2004 Consumer advocates offer the following tips for avoiding burdensome credit card debt: Set yourself up in a lifestyle you can afford, so you spend less than you earn and can build up a cushion of savings to use in an emergency. Before buying a product or a service with a credit card, ask yourself whether you can pay it off in full at the end of that month, or at least in the near future. If you have a card with a high interest rate, don't use it for big purchases. Try as much as possible to pay off balances in full.
