Caballito is the geographical centre of the city of Buenos Aires, but do not be fooled, it is not in the centre of the main tourist districts (barrios). It is situated on the west side of the city of Buenos Aires. The name is said to come from the horse-shaped (Caballo) weather vane from a local pulperia (a Gaucho bar- do not expect Octopus); Caballito meaning 'Little horse.'

Just west of Palermo, I think that Cabalitto is a great place to find a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires' more famous tourist traps. With lots of old apartment buildings and fantastic houses located on tree lined avenues, this barrio hides exceptional accommodation at great value for money, particularly if you are staying for a while.  Click a look to see budget to luxury apartments in Caballito.

Caballito has something for everyone, there are numerous places of interest; the English District with beautiful British style 'Fin de Siecle' architecture; the Ferro Carril Oeste football Club (or Verdolaga); the Historical Tramway museum of Buenos Aires;the old Mercado del Progreso (Market of Progress); the Italian and Portuguese Clubs; the Church of Caacupe, which houses an order of Irish nuns although receiving its name from a sculpture dedicated to the Virgin of Caacupe; the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires; last but not least, the historic Las Violetas coffee house inaugurated in 1884.

Buenos Aires residents first considered this district a weekend haven and you can find some architectural gems amongst the luxurious country style houses located on Rivadavia Avenue.  Ambrosio Placido Lezica's house is one of the most important of these old colonial style homes, and it was used for the construction of Rivadavia Park in 1928.  Another important park is Primera Junta Park, where a replica of the weather vane can be found
