Before I get started with additional 2008 NFL Draft coverage, I want to talk a little more about the 2007 NFL Draft and about NFL Mock Drafts. I dont understand why some people get so upset over mock drafts. I have been called every name in the book in regards to some of my mock drafts, I will admit some of my mocks have been kind of out there, but cmon people, they are just in fun. No one really knows what these NFL football teams are thinking. Plus, just because your Mock Draft doesnt correlate with the actual Draft, doesnt mean it was bad. Three years down the road, there might be a bunch of NFL teams that wished they had selected who you predicted they would select in your mock. For example, quarterback Kevin Kolb, the Eagles were blasted for taking him in the second round, but if you look closely, he might end up as the best pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. QB Kevin Kolb, (6-2 230 lbs) pounds from Houston is an incredibly experienced prospect, Kolb was highly rated out of high school and has started since he was a true freshman; he was the first true freshman to start the season opener at quarterback in the history of the University of Houston. For his collegiate career, Kolb has played in 50 games, threw for 12,964 yards, 85 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.
My other point is with the Chargers and their selection of receiver, I can almost guarantee you they will regret taking Craig Davis at the 30 spot, with receiver Anthony Gonzalez was still on board.
WR Anthony Gonzalez is a very under rated wide receiver prospect from the Ohio State University. Not only did he decide to enter the NFL as a junior, but he has been over shadowed by playing behind some incredible talent in Santonio Holmes and Tedd Ginn Jr. So his statistics might not jump out at you, but if you go back and watch his film, you will see a clutch player with great hands, and lightening quick moves.
Gonzalez is an excellent route runner and he is not afraid to go over the middle and catch the ball in traffic. Gonzalez also has high character, which is critical these days; he is a very smart player, an academic All American. Gonzalez is a philosophy/pre-law major and earned a 4.0 grade point average.
In 2005 as a sophomore he played in all 12 games and finished the season as the Buckeyes third leading receiver with 28 catches and 3 touchdowns. He also is a dangerous kick and punt returner averaging 10.0 yards on five kick returns.
Last year (2006) as a junior, Gonzalez helped his QB Troy Smith win the Heisman Trophy with numerous clutch catches. He finished the season with 51 receptions for 734 yards and 8 TDs. Gonzalez is of Cuban descent and he sleeps in an oxygen tent that has been called the bubble. He does this to help his conditioning, the same way Olympians train at high elevation.
At the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine, Gonzalez put the NFL Scouts on notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the 2007 NFL Draft. He had one of the best over-all combine performances for any position at the entire combine. His 40 yard dash time of 4.46 seconds was outstanding, but his other numbers were even better. He recorded a 38 inch vertical Jump and a 10 foot 3 inch broad jump. He also had the fastest 20 yard shuttle run of 4.08 seconds, and the fastest 3-cone time of 6.54 seconds.
